The Soundtrack of My Life

Everyone has their favorite music. Maybe for some its just a favorite band. Others, a favorite song. I have tons of favorite songs--who doesn't? I bet you could think of 10 right off the top of your head. But how many complete albums do you love? I'm talking, the whole damn thing, not just one song. I actually have quite a few albums in my iTunes library that I really do like the whole thing. To be honest, I went through and made a list of 20 and narrowed it down to just 10 so this blog wouldn't put you to sleep!

Now, here's the deal: these albums are not ranked in way, shape, or form. There is no effing way I could figure that out. I had a hard enough time cutting the 10 that I did. Some albums have stuck with me because of what they provided me at the time, some are just epic. Anyway, hope you enjoy :D

Something Corporate "Leaving Through the Window"
I figure to start it off, I'll start with my earliest favorite album. A teacher of mine gave me this album back in the 6th grade actually. I was like 12 then. That's 10 years of love. I love love love Something Corporate. Their lyrics are so intricate and flowing. Personal favorite tracks include "Punk Rock Princess," "Fall," and "Hurricane." That last one is so epic. Seriously! From the lyrics to the guitar, from Andrew McMahon's amazing voice to the part when it breaks down after the 2nd chorus--holy shit I just am in love with it. Totally brings me back to junior high walking to school to go crush on my first official boyfriend. I will always love this one.

The Soundtrack to "Cruel Intentions"
Ah, a soundtrack. I own many and love a lot of them, but not as much as this one. Another old favorite that quite possibly might also span a decade, this collection of songs so exceed the film itself. "Colorblind" makes my heart melt and "Every You and Every Me" has just a great feel to it. Obviously "Bittersweet Symphony" and "Praise You" are big hits aside from the movie, but still rock just the same. Even the semi-funky jams "Coffee & TV" and "Bedroom Dancing" are fun to listen to. I want to live my life to this soundtrack. "You Blew Me Off" is so funny, so true and so makes me want to jam with a hairbrush. I think I have...

Incubus "Make Yourself"
I don't know if I love this album so much simply because it was the first Incubus album I got my hands on, but I much prefer this one over any of their others. I just love their sound, their lyrics, their funkiness, Brandon Boyd's voice--everything. Personal favs: "Privilege," "Make Yourself," "I Miss You," "Drive," "Pardon Me," and "Stellar." So pretty much half the album, lol. This album just hit the spot back when I was in love with my first boyfriend. I actually think our song was "Stellar." Regardless, 7-8 years later, I still love it and it still affects me in a way that translates to where I am now. A good sign of a good album.
Paramore "brand new eyes"
Here's about the only semi-recent album to grace my list. It was hard to pick a favorite Paramore album for me! I love them like you wouldn't believe, but when I thought about what each album meant to me, this one took the cake. Might sound cheesy, but this was their most mature album to date and it came in a time in my life where I was having to be the most mature I ever had to be in my life. I honestly don't know that I have any specific favorites; this is one of those rare cases where I love the whole damn thing and I don't skip over songs. Doesn't happen often. If you wanna hear my thoughts on it, check out this radio piece I produced on it.

Blink-182 "Blink-182"
Oh my god this album kicks ass so hard. This one actually came out during a break-up I was going through and holy shit was it the album I fell asleep to and listened to obsessively for months! It seriously holds so much emotion for me. There are so many epic things going on it that I couldn't possibly sum it all up in a paragraph. "Feeling This" is such a great song to start off the album with. "I Miss You" was a big hit and always warms my heart with the Nightmare Before Christmas references. I love "Down" and "The Fallen Interlude," such great beats. The way "Easy Target" morphs into "All of This" blows my mind! And "Lost Without You" makes me cry. Did then, does now.
Nirvana "Nevermind"
You cannot have a top 10 album list that incorporates mostly rock and not have Nirvana somewhere on that list. Although this album is the same age as me almost, I feel like everyone has been touched by "Nevermind" at some point, regardless of age. This is an album that played on repeat in my bedroom for uncountable nights in high school. "Come As You Are" is such a chill, honest song. I love "Lithium" like you wouldn't believe. I really love Kurt Cobain's voice in "Polly" too. For some reason, that line about clipping dirty wings is so vivid. This whole album is one that I like to have playing when I'm just hanging out, doing nothing. Makes me feel cool. How lame does that sound?

Avril Lavigne "Let Go"
No, this is not a typo. I really do love this album. It actually signifies a lot for me as a person. "Let Go" came out at a time when I was sick of being a lemming, aka: I didn't want to hang out with the same peeps I had since 2nd grade anymore. Avril gave me the courage to stop dressing preppy and be a little rocker chick--in essence pointing me in the direction I am now. I was 12 or 13 at the time and full of angst and I just wanted to be different. Avril helped me to be. I will always love "Anything But Ordinary" and "Complicated" no matter how old I get. I've hated Av since she sold out with "Best Damn Thing," but I will always hold "Let Go" close to my heart. No matter how conceited she gets, I will always remember how I used to look up to her.
Train "Drops of Jupiter"
Another oldie, this album sweeps me off my feet. Sure, "Drops of Jupiter" was a bit hit and will always be fun to listen to, but the album has so much more to offer than that. "Mississippi" with its plucky guitar and heart-warming bass will make you melt, I promise. "Hopeless" and "Getaway" are amazing. "Something More" is how I have felt so many times with lyrics like "things are gonna work somehow if I just sleep another hour." And I love singing this album. I don't sing publicly, but I have an okay voice that I love to exercise at home or in the car and these songs are perfect. "Soul Sister" doesn't hold a candle to any of these songs.

Alien Ant Farm "ANThology"
Yeah so this album is 10 years old. I haven't listened to a single song from the 2 albums released after it. Alien Ant Farm isn't a band I've kept up on. I am a bad fan. But I always have and always will love this album. I couldn't tell ya if their other albums have the same sound or not really. Don't know what that says about me, but oh well. "Summer" is such a great song; it has the best play on words. "Smooth Criminal" was their big hit and I do love it. "Movies" is such a kick ass song! They have such a great sound going with the guitar, I love the lead singers voice and diction, and its just a fun album to rock out to.

Marilyn Manson "Eat Me, Drink Me"
What better note to end on than that of Marilyn Manson? I was scared shitless by Manson as a kid. But I went through this goth phase in junior high and bought his greatest hits album "Lest We Forget" and it was love ever since. "Eat Me, Drink Me" came out my senior year and I actually saw him live while he toured with it. SO EPIC LIVE. I really fell in love with Manson with this album because it was about his love life more than politics. Songs like "If I Was Your Vampire" and "Evidence" along with a few others just stir this dark, gothic romance in me. Without getting graphic on you, lets just say that this album gets in touch with a dark sensuality I didn't know I had until I heard it. To be blunt, this album turns me on.

Well, I hope I didn't loose you part way through. Just think if I had kept the list at 20! I feel like the majority of these albums are from when I was in high school, which really just says that I can't consider an album to be a favorite until it stands the test of time. I have albums I like right now, but only time will tell if they'll make the list someday. The music people love says a lot about them. What does my music say about me?

Rock on.
